How to make friends in Brisbane
You make friends in Brisbane the same way you did at school: you keep turning up to the same thing until the faces become names. The city helps. The council runs hundreds of free classes, walks and workshops every week, and most of them happen outdoors.

Pick one thing and go three times
Your first visit to a run club or a bushcare morning feels awkward for everyone. By the third visit, someone asks your name. Choose something that repeats every week and commit to three sessions before you judge it.
Good options in Brisbane: a free outdoor fitness class in your local park, a library workshop, a volunteer bushcare group, a social sport team, or a Saturday morning parkrun. The list further down shows what the council has on this week.
Where to meet people in Brisbane
Run clubs: free social runs start from South Bank, New Farm and the riverside most mornings and evenings. You don’t need to be fast, and most finish with coffee.
Social sport: mixed indoor netball, volleyball and touch football teams take solo sign-ups and put you in a team.
Volunteering: bushcare groups meet in parks across the city, and community gardens welcome new hands.
Libraries: council libraries run book clubs, craft groups and conversation groups for people learning English. They cost nothing, and regulars run them.
Classes: a pottery, dance or language course gives you the same group for six or eight weeks.
Choose activities where people talk
A gig makes conversation hard. A guided walk, a craft workshop or a working bee gives you a task and a topic, so you can talk about the plants or the pottery and skip the small talk about work.
Volunteering works well for the same reason. You stand next to someone for two hours, and the conversation looks after itself.
Meet people in Brisbane without walking in alone
Most people skip events because they don’t want to arrive by themselves. Vesica, the app we’re building for Brisbane, solves that one problem. Once it’s out, you’ll find something on, tap “I’m going”, and join a group chat with the others going. You say hi before the day, agree to meet out the front, and walk in together.
Vesica is built for friendship. You won’t find profiles to browse or one-to-one messages. You meet people through the plan.
Turn a good chat into a friendship
Before you leave, suggest the next thing. “Are you coming next week?” beats swapping numbers and hoping. A small, specific plan, like a coffee after next Saturday’s walk, gets a yes far more often than “we should hang out”.
Then follow up within a day or two, while the conversation is fresh.
Give it time
A University of Kansas study found people spend about 50 hours together before they call someone a casual friend, and about 200 hours before they call them a close friend. One great night won’t get you there. Twenty Saturday mornings will.
Count the hours, not the events. A weekly two-hour class adds up to 50 hours in about six months.
If you’re shy
Arrive five minutes early. Rooms feel easier when they fill up around you, and the organiser has time to introduce you to someone.
Ask a question about the activity. “Have you done this before?” works at every event in Brisbane and opens almost every conversation.
